Villa Rentals: Tips and Guidelines

So you're all set for a holiday in Spain – if you're traveling with a group, a villa rental is perfect. Full marks for choosing the best and most popular accommodation option for travelers today. Hardly anyone wants the standard hotel or resort rooms with their cookie-cutter décor, crowded swimming pools and gyms. The buzzwords today are value for money, unique destinations, rich travel experiences and a memorable stay.
You get all these and more with a villa rental – apart from the amazing cost-sharing benefits, you get privacy and flexibility. Bonding with your best buddies or family is of course a bonus. Sharing chores and responsibilities if you've opted for self-catering means that your kids and seniors get their preferred meals at the right time, their safety is ensured and no one gets under anyone's feet.

However, before you sign up for the first villa rental you find in the Yellow Pages or elsewhere, keep a few pointers in mind:
Scope out the market: This year, with the dim financial prospects for tourism, most villa rental owners are offering great deals and discounts. Free nights, restaurant coupons, airport transfers, discounts for staying at other properties owned, etc are available with many rental companies, apart from the usual off-peak, early-bird or last-minute deals. Minimum stay requirements are also being loosened up a bit, free house-keeping, laundry, services of a chauffeur or chef, baby-sitting, etc are all being offered and there's no harm asking your villa owner about these extras. You could end up with a dream deal. Use only trusted websites or personal recommendations.
Get Personal: Don't fall for glossy brochures and temptingly worded ads – they may be all true, but there's nothing like picking up the phone (landline preferably) and talking to the owner/agent directly. Remember that you'll have to pay a hefty agents' commission unless you're booking directly. Many owners are also more comfortable talking to potential tenants first-hand and you can keep a list of queries handy before you make the call. Check about the villa location: this is really important. If you’ve planned a beach-vacation, you don't want to live 50km away. If you're opting for self-catering, ensure there are supermarkets and stores nearby and if you're with kids or have medical issues yourself, ensure there are emergency services at hand. Check about kitchen and bath hygiene and condition of the appliances and utilities. Safety and security, transportation and who to contact in case you need help are other essential questions.

Pay Safe: Make payments only upon received written confirmation. Pay only through safe gateways and ensure that you know exactly what you're getting, including extras. Get your safety deposit back before you leave and take photos before and after you stay just in case there are issues. Take holiday insurance and it can save you a lot of headaches.
Enjoy your villa rental in Spain – it's the holiday choice of millions!
